20 Years of bryt: A Legacy of Supporting Student Recovery

Since its launch at Brookline High School in 2004, bryt has evolved into a comprehensive framework for "Tier 3" supports—the intensive, individualized interventions that enable students to successfully resume their education.

20 Years of bryt: A Legacy of Supporting Student Recovery

Twenty years ago, bryt began with a simple but urgent observation: the transition back to school after a serious mental health crisis is one of the most vulnerable moments in a student's life. Without a structured bridge between clinical care and the classroom, too many students were falling through the cracks.

The Evolution of the Model: A 20-Year Journey

The path to today's national model was built in phases, each one refining how we support the most vulnerable students.

The Foundation (2004–2016)

It began as a local effort at Brookline High, testing the hypothesis that a few weeks of intensive, coordinated care upon return could prevent a student from spiraling. This pilot proved successful, leading to a steady expansion across Massachusetts. By 2008, the first annual symposium was launched, creating a space for educators to share real-world strategies for inclusive school communities.

Validation and Rigor (2014–2018)

As the program grew, we shifted toward professional validation. In 2014, the American Psychiatric Association recognized bryt with the Gold Achievement Award. We then moved from anecdotal success to evidence-based proof, publishing a peer-reviewed study in Psychology in the Schools (2017) and the BRYT Notes qualitative report (2018).

Systemic Expansion (2018–2022)

With the evidence in place, bryt began to cross state lines. In 2020, we expanded our scope to provide professional development to districts on building mental health systems. This culminated in the founding of the Innovation Institute in 2022, establishing bryt as the first in a series of scalable mental health innovations.

National Scaling (2024–Present)

Today, the model has entered a phase of unprecedented growth. As detailed in our recent anniversary press release, a historic $13 million state investment has allowed us to bring these supports into under-resourced communities in cities like Boston, Brockton, and Springfield. Having grown to over 250 schools across six states, bryt is becoming a national standard.

The Impact of a Coordinated Approach

This journey has taught us that when we align clinical and academic supports, the outcomes change. According to the latest 2023–24 data report available at datareport.brytnational.com, the model continues to deliver high-leverage results:

  • Consistent Success: A 95% graduation rate among participating students.
  • Stabilization: A 78% reduction in re-hospitalizations, proving that school-based support is a critical component of long-term recovery.

Looking Forward

As we expand into Connecticut, New York, Ohio, and Rhode Island, our goal remains the same: to provide school leaders with the tools they need to support their most vulnerable students. We are grateful for the twenty years of partnership with educators and families who have helped us refine this model. Together, we are proving that with the right structure and a commitment to care, every student can find their way back to success.
